The Story Behind the Name: Why "Dragonfly Projects"?

If you’ve ever worked with us, you know that we approach every project with a blend of precision and long-term care. But a question we often get asked is: “Where did the name Dragonfly Projects actually come from?’

The name was inspired as it was the first meaningful thing Freddie owned, a Seaview One Design Dinghy named Dragonfly.

This 12’6” handmade, clinker-built wooden boat was the first truly valuable and meaningful asset our founder, Freddie, ever owned. It wasn’t just a boat; it was a rite of passage, gifted to him by his family when Freddie was 14 years old.

For over 80 years, Dragonfly has been a constant fixture in the waters of Seaview on the Isle of Wight. Every summer, the boat is launched for weeks of friendly (and occasionally fierce!) competition among family and friends.

About Dragonfly

Built in 1940, Dragonfly is now 86 years old. To look at her today, you wouldn't see an aging relic; you’d see an ornate and precious dinghy that still wins the occasional race.

Owning a wooden boat of that vintage teaches you a lot about management and maintenance. Much like a high-value property asset, Dragonfly requires:

  • Attentive Maintenance: You cannot ignore the small things. To keep her "moving fast," you have to understand the craftsmanship behind the build and above all look after her!

  • Precision and Care: Wooden boats require a delicate touch and an eye for detail to remain seaworthy and competitive.

  • Longevity: With the right stewardship, an asset built nearly a century ago can perform just as well today as the day it was launched.

From the Solent to Your Project

At Dragonfly Projects, we carry that same ethos into our work. We view the projects we manage not just as builds or investments, but as assets that require expertise, tradition, and a forward-thinking approach to maintenance and performance.

Whether we are managing a complex development or a prime refurbishment, we bring the spirit of Dragonfly to the table: a respect for the bones of a project, a commitment to craftsmanship, and the drive to ensure that every asset we touch is positioned to "win the race" for years to come.

So, the next time you see our logo, know that it stands for more than just a name - it stands for 85 years of heritage, a love for fine craftsmanship, and the dedication required to keep a classic performing at its peak.
